The Larrabee Fund Association of Greater Hartford

The Larrabee Fund Association of Greater Hartford is a private grantmaking foundation that was established in 1863 at the direction of Major Charles Larrabee. Major Larrabee’s stated goal was to help women, especially those suffering from medical issues. Men are NOT eligible to apply.

In keeping with his wishes, grants are given to women who cannot otherwise fully support themselves because of age, illness or disability.  Assisting older women is a priority.

Applicants for assistance must reside in one of the seven towns that are physically contiguous to the city of Hartford: Bloomfield, East Hartford, Newington, South Windsor, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor.

Applications must come from a social worker or case worker and not from the applicant herself.

Assistance may be in the form of a one-time payment for medical or living expenses and/or a monthly stipend not to exceed $225/month for three-six months.

The Board consists of up to 25 women who represent religious congregations within the seven service towns as well as the city of Hartford.

The Fund does NOT pay:

  • bills that are in collection
  • credit card bills
  • educational expenses
  • bills incurred outside of the state of Connecticut
  • travel expenses
  • insurance premiums
  • taxes
  • more than $1000 per year of dental expenses.
  • women on public assistance may only receive one-time payments for bills, not a monthly stipend.

As adapted from the will of Major Charles Larrabee:

Dear God, there is but one human family, whose children find refuge in the shadow of Thy wings.  How precious is Thy steadfast love, O God. Help us to set an example in deeds, as well as in words, of the kind and charitable duties of all Thy family, and to reflect, ever devoted love to all fellow beings in all the future and hereafter….Amen.
